The Cashmans and other multigenerational trading families were a hallmark of Chicago's commodity pits, their flailing arms and unique hand gestures a signature of the Chicago Board of Trade and its THE PIT The Pit is the physical trading platform where CBOT traders conduct transactions using the open outcry method of trading. Traders and brokers use shouting and certain hand signals to indicate buy or sell intentions. This method of trading has been to a large extent replaced by electronic trading systems. Operating during regular trading hours (RTH), the CBOT trading floor contains many such pits. The steps up on the outside of the octagon and the steps down on the inside give the pit something of the appearance of an amphitheater, and allow hundreds of traders to see and hear each other during trading hours.
